This report details findings from research commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) into higher education providers in the UK which do not access recurrent funding through a higher education funding council; these providers are commonly referred to as alternative providers. This report seeks to gather further information on the wider alternative provider sector, and the structure of the market and of the students that it serves. It covers providers of Level four and above qualifications that do not receive recurrent Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) funding. It includes providers with courses designated as eligible for student loan support, and the wider population of providers without such designated courses. Along with a survey of providers, desk and web-research was conducted to map the market and gather data on providers. Information was also gathered from students and leavers, primarily those that had received student financial support.
